Hethersett landowner John Flowerdew in 1549 enclosed his land, an action which was in part responsible for causing Kett's Rebellion. Men from Wymondham and probably Hethersett marched on Norwich after mustering under the shade of an old oak tree, since referred to as Kett's Oak and preserved for posterity.
